The Sport of Water Polo posted by Water Polo
Water polo is a team sport played in a pool having two goals at the opposing ends. The aim of the game is to throw the maximum number of balls into the opposing team's goal. Each team must have six field players and a goalkeeper at any given time in the water. Teams are allowed to have up to six substitute field players, and one substitute goalkeeper. The sport is usually played in a pool that is 1.8 meters deep, and hence, players must have good endurance and stamina for playing this sport.
The ball used for this sport floats on water, and its size and weight will vary depending who is playing the game. The goals are similar to hockey goals, and they float on water, or could be attached to the poolsides. The goals have a height of 90 centimeters from the water level, and are three meters wide. There are no fixed regulations for the size of the water polo pool, and it could vary from 20 x 10 to 30 x 30 meters. The pool's center is designated by a white line, and the rest of the area is demarcated by five-meter lines in yellow, where penalties can be shot. There is also a two-meter line in red where the attacking team players cannot receive the ball.
The players of each team wear specific colored caps that are numbered. The players swim shooting, throwing, and catching the ball, and they are not assigned specific roles for attack or defense. Except the goalkeeper, the other players can take whatever positions they feel are best for the game. Players are not allowed to push the ball underwater or hold or push opposing players, except when they are holding the ball. Only the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with both hands and he can stand on the bottom surface, if the pool is shallow.
